Message from our Chief Nurse Executive
Dear Nursing Colleagues,
Welcome to the CHRISTUS Hospital website! CHRISTUS Hospital is one of the largest facilities in the CHRISTUS Health system, encompassing two hospital campuses – St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, Texas and St. Mary in Port Arthur, Texas. We are recognized as the regional health care leader in Southeast Texas. CHRISTUS Hospital employs approximately 2,700 associates; 2,000 on the St. Elizabeth campus and nearly 700 on the St. Mary campus.
The St. Elizabeth campus is the recognized leader in outpatient services, cardiology, cardiac catheterization services, cardiac alert services, cardiac rehabilitation, oncology, neurology, pediatrics, general surgery, birthing, neonatal care, imaging, spine, emergency services, and is designated as the only Level III Trauma Center in the area. Adjacent to the main hospital building is the W.P. Hebert Health and Wellness Center and Outpatient Pavilion. Dedicated units within the Outpatient Pavilion include outpatient surgery, diagnostics, endoscopy, hyperbaric medicine and wound care, and diabetes education. The St. Mary campus provides services in orthopedics, cardiology, oncology, neurology, birthing, neonatal care, pediatrics, women’s health, imaging, general surgery, emergency services, and is designated as the only Level IV Trauma Center in the area.
CHRISTUS Hospital is one of only three percent of hospitals in the country to be a recipient ofthe Magnet Recognition Program® from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). We are the first within the CHRISTUS Health system to receive Magnet designation, and the largest hospital in Southeast Texas to hold this honor.
CHRISTUS Hospital has been the recipient of numerous other accolades. We are a Texas Nurses Association Nurse-Friendly™ Hospital, and our Diabetes Education Program is accredited by the Joint Commission – the only one in the state of Texas and one of only ten in the nation! We have also received recognition from the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines program as a “Heart Failure Participating Hospital” and a “Coronary Artery Disease Participating Hospital” – Level II.
Excellent care delivery contributed to CHRISTUS Hospital receiving the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Achievement Award in May 2007, an achievement awarded to only 25 of 390 eligible Texas hospitals. CHRISTUS Hospital – St. Elizabeth recently received the HealthGrades Specialty Excellence Award in Maternity Care and Spine Surgery, while St. Mary was awarded the HealthGrades Superior Clinical Performance Award in Orthopedics Care and was five-star rated in Maternity Care. These awards place us in the top 10 percent of hospitals participating in HealthGrades. HealthGrades analyzes patient outcome data for over 350 hospitals in 17 states. Additionally, we are designated as a Texas Mother-Friendly worksite.
Other programs of interest include our Cardiac Alert Program, Hospital Elder Life Program, Care Transitions Program, and the Palliative Care Program. Our nurses participate in research and evidence-based practice projects and publish and present at national conferences. More than 60 percent of eligible registered nurses participate in our generous clinical ladder program and all participate in our shared decision-making model that enables nurses to have responsibility and accountability for their practice.
