Our Services
Pediatric Care
In the pediatric units of CHRISTUS Hospital—St. Elizabeth and St. Mary, the physicians, nurses, and other clinicians approach patient care through the eyes of a child. That means providing an environment that is "kid-friendly," from comfortable, brightly decorated rooms, to a play area that will help entertain the patient and their family.
We understand that children are not just mini adults: their bodies (and minds) work in different ways. Because children are still growing, the impact of the illness or injury on their development has to be taken into account. And because they are young, they may be more scared or confused by what is happening to them. That's why we provide pediatric nurses who understand a child’s needs.
Our experienced pediatric nursing staff works closely with patient's families as part of the caring process.
A broad range of pediatric–centered health services focus on a child including:
- Speech/Physical/Occupation Therapy
- Social Work
- Pastoral Care and Pediatric Nutrition
Along with free wireless internet connection, we also provide a DVD/VCR system that offers more than 300 movie titles for the enjoyment of our patients and their families. Plans are underway to provide a similar system with PlayStation®3’s. We are greatful to the Children’s Miracle Network for providing these amenities with the contributions they have received from our community during the annual CMN telethon.
The CHRISTUS Hospital-St. Elizabeth and St. Mary Pediatric Department and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St. Elizabeth in Beaumont work to heal the smallest of Southeast Texas residents.
CHRISTUS Hospital—St. Elizabeth Pediatric Unit
The Effie M. Hebert Pediatric Center opened on the fifth floor of the hospital in 2006. The high-tech facility features the latest in pediatric technology, along with a playful nature-themed design, complete with a life-size forest, animals, and other wildlife.
The 16-bed pediatric unit was designed expressly with the comfort of CHRISTUS Hospital-St. Elizabeth’s youngest patients in mind. From the colorful IV poles with rollerblade wheels to our hippopotamus inspired exam table, no detail was overlooked. Spacious patient rooms foster a healing environment by allowing parents to be close at hand to comfort their sick child.
Department mascot Petey the Sun Perch, can be found in the hallways near the aquarium awaiting a friendly hello, while onlookers can admire the children’s art gallery exhibiting colorful pieces from around the globe. For the true toy connoisseur, characters from the popular animated feature Toy Story, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, will be ready for boundless adventures as they cheerfully delight visitors in the playroom.
In addition to fostering a child-friendly atmosphere, the CHRISTUS Hospital Pediatric ICU is equipped with four specialized pediatric patient monitoring beds, coupled with the combined use of high-tech monitoring, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
CHRISTUS Hospital—St. Mary Pediatric Unit
Thanks to a donation from Valero Energy, the 19-bed pediatric wing at St. Mary is being refitted with equipment designed especially for children. The wing will feature a large play area along with child-sized furniture, brightly colored décor and a large aquarium. Set for completion in early 2008, the new pediatric unit will provide our patients and their families with as many of the comforts of home as possible during their stay at CHRISTUS Hospital-St. Mary.
