Wound Care

Many wounds can be treated by primary care physicians. Hard-to-heal or chronic wounds – ones that have failed to heal after many weeks or years of routine treatment – require advanced care. If you are suffering from a problem wound, the CHRISTUS Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center provides a comprehensive approach to treat this serious, painful, and debilitating affliction.

We do not replace the primary physician, who is managing the patients overall medical needs. In fact, we work closely with the primary care physicians, surgeons, and other specialists in the coordination of care to achieve positive results.

The wound management team.

The CHRISTUS Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, registered nurses, and certified hyperbaric technologists that specialize in advanced wound care and hyperbaric medicine.

A comprehensive approach to treatment.

There are many reasons why a wound may not heal including infection, lack of adequate blood flow, pressure and/or repeated injury to the wound, and medical conditions including diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, malnutrition, and anemia.

We evaluate each wound on an individual basis and develop a plan of care to ensure proper treatment is administered. Our advanced wound care program includes surgical and ultrasonic excision of dead tissue under topical, local, and/or intravenous anesthesia, as well as the application of bio engineered skin substitutes, living growth factors, and silver and hyperbaric oxygen

Hyperbaric Medicine

If you need further information about hyperbaric oxygen therapy please call your physician or a member of the hyperbaric care team at 409.924.6975.

The CHRISTUS Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center provides the only multi-patient hyperbaric chamber in Southeast Texas. Located on the ground floor of the CHRISTUS Outpatient Pavilion, the state-of-the art chamber is designed to accommodate 12 patients and is equipped with comfortable seats and view ports. While in the chamber, patients can read books and magazines, watch TV, or listen to music.

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you will breathe 100% oxygen. The chamber is pressurized as prescribed by your doctor. The therapy greatly increases the amount of oxygen delivered to your body tissues by the bloodstream. This hyperbaric, or high pressure, dose of oxygen provides distinct therapeutic benefits.

While hyperbaric oxygen therapy was initially used to treat divers with decompression sickness, its role has expanded to become an effective treatment for non-healing wounds and many other illnesses and medical conditions. Patients with diabetes often develop severe non-healing wounds that require surgical intervention. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proven to be a valuable therapy for these patients. Those who suffer with pressure ulcers, arterial ulcers, and other types of wounds that fail to respond to conservative therapy, may also be candidates for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. While it may be used as the primary treatment for some disorders, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often combined with antibiotics and surgery in many treatment plans.

Other illnesses or injuries that can be treated with hyperbaric therapy include:

  • crush injuries
  • necrotizing soft tissue infections: "flesh eating bacteria"
  • bone infections
  • burns
  • radiation tissue damage
  • compromised skin grafts and amputation stumps
  • carbon monoxide poisoning
  • smoke inhalation
  • cyanide poisoning
  • decompression illness

For most indications treatment is given once daily for 90 minutes for two to eight weeks.
